  • Army Capt. Kimberly N. Hampton, 27, of Easley, S.C.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 82nd Aviation Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Jan. 2 when her OH-58 Kiowa observation helicopter was shot down by enemy ground fire in Fallujah, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Solomon C. Bangayan, 24, of Jay, Vt.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed in action when his convoy was ambushed by the enemy who used an improvised explosive device (IED), small arms fire, and a rocket-propelled grenade, on Jan. 2 in Baghdad.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Craig Davis, 37, of Opelousas, La.; assigned to the 603rd Transportation Company, 142nd Corps Support Battalion, Fort Polk, La.; killed in action while on board a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter when it crashed during a Medevac mission, on Jan. 8 in Fallujah, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Keicia M. Hines, 27, of Citrus Heights, Calif.; assigned to the 108th Military Police, Combat Support Co., Fort Bragg, N.C. died Jan. 14 when she was struck by a vehicle on Mosul Airfield in Mosul, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Roland L. Castro, 26, of San Antonio, Texas; assigned to Battery A, 1st Battalion, 12th Field Artillery, based at Fort Sill, Okla.; died from a non-hostile gunshot wound, Jan. 16, in Camp Cedar II, Iraq.

  • Army Master Sgt. Kelly L. Hornbeck, 36, of Fort Worth, Texas; assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, based at Fort Carson, Colo.; died of combat wounds Jan. 18 at 28th Combat Support Hospital (CSH), Iraq. Hornbeck sustained his injuries Jan. 16 when an improvised explosive device hit his vehicle south of Samarra, Iraq. He was initially evacuated to the 21st CSH, and then moved to the 28th CSH for further treatment.

  • Army Spc. Gabriel T. Palacios, 22, of Lynn, Mass.; assigned to the 588th Engineer Battalion (Heavy), 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Jan. 21 in a mortar attack on his forward operating base in Ba’qubah, Iraq.

  • Army Pfc. James David Parker, 20, of Bryan, Texas; assigned to the 588th Engineer Battalion (Heavy), 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Jan. 21 in a mortar attack on his forward operating base in Baqubah, Iraq.

  • Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brian D. Hazelgrove, 29, of Fort Rucker, Ala.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), based at Fort Drum, N.Y.; killed Jan. 23 when his OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopter crashed on its way back from a combat mission near Mosul in northern Iraq.

  • Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Michael T. Blaise, 29, of Tennessee; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Campbell, Ky.; killed Jan. 23 when his OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopter crashed on its way back from a combat mission near Mosul in northern Iraq.

  • Army Spc. William R. Sturges Jr., 24, of Spring Church, Pa.; assigned to Company B, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, Fort Hood Texas; attached to Task Force All American; killed Jan. 24 when a vehicle-based improvised explosive device detonated in Khalidiyah, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Randy S. Rosenberg, 23, of Berlin, N.H.; assigned to Company B, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, Fort Hood Texas; attached to Task Force All American; killed Jan. 24 when a vehicle-based improvised explosive device detonated in Khalidiyah, Iraq.

  • Army Pfc. Ervin Dervishi, 21, Fort Worth, Texas; assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas; died Jan. 24 when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the Bradley Fighting Vehicle in which he was traveling on combat patrol in Baji, Iraq. He was evacuated to the 28th Combat Support Hospital where he later died.

  • North Dakota Army National Guard Sgt. Keith L. Smette, 25, of Fargo, N.D.; assigned to the 957th Engineer Company, 130th Engineer Brigade, Army National Guard, Bismarck, N.D.; attached to Task Force All American; died Jan. 24 when his convoy was attacked by an improvised explosive device north of Fallujah, Iraq.

  • North Dakota Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Kenneth W. Hendrickson, 41, of Bismarck, N.D.; assigned to the 957th Engineer Company, 130th Engineer Brigade, Army National Guard, Bismarck, N.D.; attached to Task Force All American; died Jan. 24 when his convoy was attacked by an improvised explosive device north of Fallujah, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Bunda, 29, of Bremer, Wash; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, based at Fort Lewis, Wash.; killed Jan. 25 when his boat capsized during a patrol on the Tigris River. Bunda was originally listed as duty status whereabouts unknown. His remains were recovered Feb. 10.

  • Army 1st Lt. Adam G. Mooney, 28, of Cambridge, Md.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Aviation, Fort Drum, N.Y.; attached to 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum; killed Jan. 25 when his helicopter went down in the Tigris River during a search for a missing soldier in Mosul, Iraq. Mooney was listed as duty status whereabouts unknown after the crash. His remains were recovered Feb. 14.

  • Army Chief Warrant Officer Patrick Dorff, 32, of Minnesota; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Aviation (Fort Drum); attached to the 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y; killed Jan. 25 when his Kiowa Warrior helicopter went down in the Tigris River during a search for four soldiers whose watercraft had capsized. Dorff was listed as duty status whereabouts unknown after the crash. His remains were recovered Jan. 29.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Lester O. Kinney II, 27, of Zanesville, Ohio; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 505th Infantry, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Jan. 27 in an improvised explosive device attack near Iskandariyah, Iraq.

  • Army Capt. Matthew J. August, 28, of Rhode Island; assigned to Company B, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division (Mech), Fort Riley, Kan.; killed Jan. 27 in an improvised explosive device attack in Khalidiyah, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. 1st Class James T. Hoffman, 41, of Whitesburg, Ky.; assigned to Company B, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division (Mech), Fort Riley, Kan.; killed Jan. 27 in an improvised explosive device attack in Khalidiyah, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Travis A. Moothart, 23, of Brownsville, Ore.; assigned to Company B, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division (Mech), Fort Riley, Kan.; killed Jan. 27 in an improvised explosive device attack in Khalidiyah, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Cory R. Mracek, 26, of Hay Springs, Neb.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 319th Field Artillery, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Jan. 27 in an improvised explosive device attack near Iskandariyah, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Sean G. Landrus, 31, of Thompson, Ohio; assigned to Company B, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Riley, Kan.; died Jan. 29 at the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Iraq of injuries sustained two days earlier when a roadside improvised explosive device exploded in Khalidiyah, Iraq.

  • Army Pfc. Luis A. Moreno, 19, of the Bronx, N.Y.; assigned to Battery A, 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery, based at Fort Riley, Kan.; died Jan. 29 at the Lakenheath Medical Treatment Facility, United Kingdom, after he was shot on Jan. 23 while he was guarding a gas station in Baghdad.

  • Army Sgt. Benjamin L. Gilman, 28, of Meriden Conn.; assigned to 41st Engineer Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; killed Jan. 29, 2004, when a weapons cache exploded in Ghazni, Afghanistan. He was listed as duty status unknown until his remains were recovered on Feb. 2.

  • Army Spc. Robert M. Cook, 24, of Sun Prairie Wis.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; killed when a weapons cache exploded on Jan. 29, 2004, in Afghanistan.

  • Army Pfc. Holly J. McGeogh, 19, of Taylor, Mich.; assigned to Company A, 4th Forward Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Division (Mech), Fort Hood, Texas; killed Jan. 31 when her vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Kirkuk, Iraq.
