Margate Marine killed in Iraq

MARGATE, Fla. — A Marine from Florida was killed by an improvised explosive device in Iraq, the Department of Defense said Monday.

Cpl. Pablo V. Mayorga, 33, of Margate, died Saturday along with three other soldiers.

The four Marines were on combat operations in the Al Anbar province in western Iraq when the explosive device struck their vehicle, the Defense Department said.

Also killed in the attack were Lance Cpl. Derrick J. Cothran, 21, of Avondale, La., Lance Cpl. Justin D. Sims, 22, of Covington, Ky., and Pfc. Ryan G. Winslow, 19, of Jefferson, Ala.

Mayorga, Cothran, and Winslow were assigned to the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. Sims was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. Both units are based at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

A telephone call to Mayorga’s home was not immediately returned Monday.
