LYNCHBURG, Va. — Pfc. Jason Scheuerman of Lynchburg died in Iraq from non-combat related injuries, the Pentagon announced Monday.

Scheuerman’s relatives said they have not been told specifically how he died Saturday. They said the Army told them the death is still being investigated.

Family members remembered Scheuerman, 20, as a young man who loved life and enjoyed hiking, rock climbing and playing video games.

“He was a fun-loving person,” said his uncle, Geary Jarrett. “He was deep intellectually.”

Scheuerman spent part of his high school years at Heritage High School in Lynchburg before finishing high school in Sanford, N.C., in 2003. During high school he participated in the ROTC.

Scheuerman and his brother Chris, 21, both joined the Army after high school. Chris Scheuerman is a chaplain’s assistant at Fort Bragg, N.C. Jason Scheuerman was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, at Fort Benning, Ga.
